Question 1

The situation I was in during the formation of the listening diary was presentation of my speech to the class. During the presentation, I not only made the speech, but I also listened to the information I was passing to the other students.

Question 2

My dominant listening style was content-oriented. My major interest was on the quality of the message that I passed to the other students. I chose this style because it allowed me to evaluate the quality of ideas contained in my speech.

 Question 3

I engaged in selective listening and ambushing. Selective listening was due to my focus on the interesting parts of the speech, while ignoring the other parts. Under ambushing, I listened for any weaknesses in my speech. My typical listening behavior is selective listening. Ambushing occurs in very minimal situations.

Question 4

I did engage in informational listening. When listening to my speech, my goal was to understand and identify the main thoughts and ideas I was passing to the other students. I wanted to clearly identify with these thoughts and ideas.

Question 5

I did engage in critical listing. I evaluated the quality of the ideas I passed through my speech, to understand whether they were valid or not. I did this by examining my evidence and reasoning to evaluate their validity. I exhibited effective and informational listening, but I also engaged in selective and ambushing types of listening. My listening behavior was influenced by the need to evaluate the quality of my speech, need to understand my ideas and need to assess their appeal to the audience.

Question 6

The supportive response styles I used were agreement, and praise. I agreed with all the information I gave in the speech, because it was well researched. I felt that I needed to congratulate myself for the job well done, as my speech was appealing to most of the students.

Question 7

My strengths as a listener are I am attentive, supportive, I do not judge, I advice where I can and ask questions to understand better. My weakness is that I tend to get distracted easily and I am usually a selective listener. I was more attentive at the beginning of the speech since most of the valuable information was provided at this stage, but I was less attentive at the end during the conclusion as it was a summary of what I had already heard.

Question 8

The communication situations were affected positively by my listening behavior. First I managed to evaluate the quality if the speech and the authenticity of the ideas that I presented. In this way, I was able to understand the factors that would make me a better communicator. From the situations, I leant that I am a good informational, critical and supportive listener. However, I get distracted easily during the listening process.

Question 9
