Anglo California

In “Intimate frontiers” Hurtado argues that by the second half of the nineteenth century California was entering an era of Anglo Hegemony. How did this happen? In other words, when and why did Anglos filter into California, who, exactly, did they encounter there, and how do we explain their remarkable success? And even more specifically, what role did sex and gender play in helping these Anglo newcomers assume control of California? Be sure to cite specific examples in making the case from the book.
