The Federal Government should Provide Health Care for all Citizens who cannot afford their Own

Healthcare is not a right if one cannot afford it. For instance, in my lifetime, I have never lived without a health insurance and it has never affected me negatively. However, people with severe illness such as cancer, high blood pleasure and tuberculosis should be given health insurance. This is because they have to pay a visit for regular health professions every time hence those who cannot afford health insurance should be provided it by the federal government. This will be much cheaper than communist health care thus can be able to meet their health needs. However, federal government health care is not provided free because of high taxes imposed indirectly on other services thus many issues have been raised against it than supporting it.

Free health care does not really mean that everything is being provided free. This is because we have to pay for the service with spending cuts in other fields such as on the education or commercial services. The government can provide health care to those who cannot afford it but they increase the cost of living on things like food or education sector through charging high taxes. The government pays it somehow but the rest is paid indirectly from the public (Messerli 2011). Therefore, there is no meaning of imposing heavy taxes to the public on the expense of providing health care, which is not on the real sense free. It would not be worthy if the government cuts research on AIDS or education in the expense of other things yet making the cost of living unaffordable to the poor.

Those who need convincing about this argument are the individuals who cannot afford to pay for themselves a health insurance especially the elderly, unemployed and people with low income. Like social safety, the public take any federal government assistance as a right, meaning it is politically impossible to avoid it when costs increase. For instance, social security was put to help the elderly to live in their last few years but people live even longer than the approximated life span hence making the program unsustainable. Therefore, the system is becoming bankruptcy because there is nobody to fix it and the program is costly hence the government cannot be able to re-structure the system (Teixeira 2005).

The government has power to change about the status quo in order to distribute the health care services. If the government has to provide health care to those who cannot afford it, then it means that they will be forced to increase taxes on working class individuals depending on the income amount everybody earns. This means that the healthy individuals who are able to cater for themselves will have to carry the burden of those who have severe illness such as cancer or Aids (Reid 495). The health care for an individual is determined by their lifestyle such as eating habits. Therefore, there is no need to punish the individuals who care for their health on behalf of those who does not care for their health.

There are multiple perspectives involved in the health care issue. Hence, a single government agency cannot run the health care efficiently like that of private sector, which utilizes their resources efficiently. There are cases of the government wasting a lot of millions and dollars in research and design projects that leads to associated costs. Corruptions cases on the government are increasing everyday and costs for supporting the health departments are enormous. For instance, consider Barrack Obama’s bill on health care that was passed on 2009 and the way it hardly scratches the surface on how the health care law will be put into practice (Government printing office 7236). Implementing this policy is difficult because it means that the government will need to change the system of income tax and this will affect the high-income levels negatively.

There is a compromise position I should argue for and this include, first, provision of free medicine will encourage patients to inquire earlier about their problems and even can be able to take preventive medicine. Individuals often avoid taking preventive measures because of the health care associated costs. Those individuals who are not insured or does not have a health insurance face many problems. For instance, people living with HIV virus and cannot afford their health care should be provided with a health insurance by the government. The federal government should provide routine programs such as HIV testing program and other preventive major issues in order to help the public meet their health needs. This will not only benefit the patients but also reduce the entire cost system.

Secondly, it will enable the medical professions to concentrate on curing the patients rather than concentrating on health insurance procedures. If the federal government should provide the health care to those who cannot afford it, then cases of malpractice will be reduced. In addition, the health care professions would now understand the insurance plans and they would know what tests can be prearranged. A simplified widespread health care would enable medical professions to work hard and enable the patients to meet their best. For instance, people suffering from HIV diseases and other critical condition such as cancer can be able to acquire affordable health treatment (Messerli 2011).

In addition, patients with critical situations can still be able to obtain their health insurance. One of the major problems that patients face in the society is unlimited access to health care services. Often individuals with critical diseases such as cancer cannot be able to obtain health care because of the expenses associated since they have to go for check-ups and buy medicine every time. Insurance companies sometimes do not offer a policy to such people but incase they provide assistance they do not cover everything. Therefore, the federal government in the health care system at this point will intrude in to provide a fully health coverage to patients with severe illness.
