English 111                         Essay 1                           Professor Land

Introduction. We have begun to discuss in this class, especially in Stevens’ Short Prose for Critical Readers, the basic components of rhetorical analysis and literary structure. In chapter 2, for example, Stevens introduces what he calls the analytic theme statement, and in chapter 4 he summarizes some of the major elements of literary structure (like setting, character, plot and tone). Peppered throughout these chapters, we have encountered a number of short stories (listed below).

“A Rose for Emily,” by William Faulkner.

Option 2. Write an essay on the theme of memory and how it functions in any of the short stories.(see especially the passage on page 86 about “the need to forget”), and William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily.”

Details Remember that none of these options is a response essay; rather, they are more like an interpretive analysis. Each option asks you to engage the story critically and to analyze the literary elements present within the story. This means that you must quote and cite the text carefully, even meticulously. You also must present passages as supporting evidence of your claims. Essays that do not rely on quotation, paraphrase, summary (and the like) for evidence will be scored poorly. Consider beginning with a short summary of the basic story, and then move from there to a more specific claim or suggestion that, through evidence, you will persuade the reader of.

Due The essay is due promptly at the beginning of class on Wednesday, July the 13th. Staple your essay in the top left corner and to give it an original title.  Meticulously follow the following formatting instructions: 12 point Times New Roman font; 1.25 inch margins; name, date, instructor name and class at top left of page one; no cover pages.  All citations should be in MLA format, and should reference the page numbers from the Stevens’ text. If you cite writing not from our reading list you must include a works cited page.
