choose Shakespeare’s Sonnet 73 and Dickinson’s “Because I Could Not Stop for Death.”
Compare the two poems using one or more of the elements we have been
over. For example, if you chose the two poems above, you might compare
the use of figurative language and the use of sound devices.
Your thesis should have a point. The two poems have x and y in common (or differ in their use of x and y), which results in z.
How to Organize Your Essay:
Introduction: Your introduction should very briefly summarize the two
poems. Somewhere in that introduction, you should tell us what the poems
are, including the full title and the author’s full name for each.
After the first mention of author names, use only the last names. The
introduction may be 1-2 paragraphs. It should end with a thesis
statement that outlines your argument.
Body paragraphs: Each body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence
that relates back to your thesis in some way. After the topic sentence,
you should introduce evidence from the text, which will come largely
from your answers to response questions. Then you must thoroughly
explain the conclusions you came to as a result of the evidence.
Conclusion: Do NOT simply rewrite your introduction and thesis. Come
back to the ideas in your thesis and explain why it matters.
