1) Read chapter 7 of “Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners” by Echevarria, Vogt and Short. Answer the following questions:
How do you integrate 4 skills in your lesson plans? Do you try to hit them all in every lesson, or over several lessons? What is your rationale for this? Discuss the lesson/s you’ve been modifying, or a hypothetical lesson plan or small unit.
2) Read chapter 7 of “Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners” by Echevarria, Vogt and Short. Answer the following questions:
Post an objective, one from the lesson/s you’ve been modifying or a different objective, and translate it into a student-friendly version. Then discuss how students will be able to evaluate their own engagement with that objective. For example, if you were using KWL, where you ask kids what they Know, what they Want to know and what they Learned, what ways might you use to find out, with them, what they learned? Is it enough just to give them a quiz and share the results with them?
3) View the powerpoint attached and answer the following questions:
How did this powerpoint influence your thoughts about BICS and CALP Theory? Does it explain what it purports to explain, why most ELLs need about 5 years before they can do well on tests in English? Are other explanations possible?
4) Read BICS/CALP encyclopedia entry (see attached) and answer the following:
What struck you about this reading (an encyclopedia entry) on BICS and CALP?
