Managing Environmental Waste

Managing Environmental Waste
You are a plant manager for a chemical company called Villa Chemical. Late last year, rival chemical company Encino Limited was sued in federal court by an environmental group called Clean Environment Now for exceeding its permit limits for water discharges and air emissions. After the suit was initiated, U.S. EPA investigated the same facility and discovered that workers had falsified monitoring reports related to those emissions.
As a result, the company not only faces a civil suit with the environmental group, but a criminal suit with the federal government too. Product quality, sales, and employee morale are also at all-time lows. Experts watching this case believe that if the company is found guilty on all charges it will be required to update all of its water and air pollution control equipment on top of paying civil penalties and criminal fines. The total costs from these four items alone could exceed $1 billion.
The CEO of Villa Chemical Company is concerned about the Encino Limited case and the environmental vulnerabilities at your own plant. Just like Encino Limited, your plant discharges emissions to the air and water and you are also required to submit monitoring reports to U.S. EPA. Your company is a leader in the industry and the Board of Directors wants it to keep its competitive edge.
As a result, the CEO wants you, as the plant manager, to write a 4-5 page memo that discusses some of the environmental management techniques that can be used to ensure that what happened at Encino will not happen at Villa. You must discuss how these techniques are applied, and what differences they have made, both positive and negative, in relation to environmental management. Specifically, the CEO wants you to focus on the use of environmental management systems such, as ISO 14000, as a means that the company can use to manage its operations to ensure environmental compliance and environmental protection. While 14000 is a series of standards, the CEO wants you to focus exclusively on ISO 14001, which relates to environmental management systems.
