In the 20th century classical composers from the United States began stepping out of the European shadow of influence through the movement known as “nationalism”, energized by the sounds and diversity of one’s own culture. Compare three very different American pieces of music from your CDs: III #12 Ives: General William Booth Enters into Heaven; #16 Copland: Appalachian Spring; and #14 Anger: Street Stuff. Compare and discuss these pieces of music from the “American” perspective of sound. What makes them sound “American”? Can we get from them a definition of what sounds, melodies, rhythms are part of the nationalized classical music from the United States? What might that be?
