For this week, you read an article by Mark Granovetter titled, “The
Strength of Weak Ties.” This is a very difficult reading. It is filled
with dense sociological language. But I encourage you to read and
re-read the article, because the fundamental point Granovetter makes is
important for understanding the role social networks play in our lives.
Social networks are the set of formal and informal ties that people
have to one another, where the ties people have with one another can be
strong or weak. According to Granovetter, what are the benefits of weak
ties? And how do weak ties matter for getting a job? Draw on this
week’s discussion reading, “A friend in need is a prospect, indeed” in
writing up your answer.
