For your course project this semester, you will be required to read and evaluate a non-fiction book pertaining to the study of Marriages and Families. There are literally hundreds of books available pertaining to related issues/concepts/topics, etc. You can choose a ‘self-help’ book, a book about a specific area of marriage and/or family you are interested in such as divorce, parenting issues, child abuse, communication, conflict, domestic violence, etc., or a book about the general state of marriage and families as a whole. The possibilities are almost endless!! To get a good idea of what is out there, visit http://www.amazon.com and search for “Marriage and Family” or the specific topic that interests you (you can also scan your textbook for topic ideas). The book you choose should be at least 250 pages in length and should have been published on or after the year of 2003. After reading your book thoroughly, write your review based on the following questions:
Provide the title of the book, the date of publication, and the number of pages.
Summarize the contents of the book by including a summary of each chapter and an overall synopsis of what the book was all about.
Give some background information on the author. Is this author a psychologist? A sociologist? A social worker? A therapist? This information will either be found on the book cover or can be looked up on the internet.
What are you own feelings about the information contained in the book? Was it useful to you? Factual? Common sensical? Achievable? In other words, what do you think about the information the author presented? Could readers easily implement the ideas contained in the book or benefit from the theories and information presented? Why or why not?
Discuss any faulty reasoning or bias you found in the book…was there anything you felt was ‘wrong’?
What type of audience would benefit the most from reading this book? Married Couples? Singles? Grandparents? Parents? Mental health professionals? Anyone?
List and discuss/define any new concepts, phrases, vocabulary, etc. that you learned from this book.
Finally…discuss whether or not you would recommend this book to others…overall, do you give it a thumbs up or a thumbs down? Why?
Your book review should be at least 8 pages in length, and the paper should be typed (double spaced) with particular attention paid to grammar and spelling. Be sure to include a title page that includes the title of the book and the author’s name, as well as your own name and date
