Celiac disease and psychological disorders

Celiac disease is an affliction of the autoimmune disorder that is triggered by lack of digestion of gluten and some form of barley or rye in the body. It was first detected when people started farming their own grain crops. It was noticed that the proteins from these grains were the cause of deaths to the people especially infants between the age of one to five years. A more concrete discovery of gluten being the cause of these deaths was noticed after the World War II. A certain pediatrician noted the decline in deaths rate follwing the war as a result of the shortage of bread. This pediatrician also noted that the death rate increased to the levels it was before after the bread shortage ended.

In the normal digestive track, food is first processed to a certain degree before being passed to the small intestines that are lined with the villi which is a fingerlike structure to be broken down further. Here, certain enzymes found in the pancreas and the epithelial cells present on the villi break down the food into sizeable pieces that are easy to pass into the blood stream and energize the body. Patients that suffer from celiac disease are borne with certain genetic that are susceptible to this disease. In addition, they have an unusual permeable intestinal wall (Fasano, 2009).
