Many of Today’s Drivers have Dangerous Habits
In this modern era, the number of road accidents has increased significantly. Reckless driving habits causes majority of these accidents. Many of today’s drivers have dangerous driving habits. In our day-to-day lives, you will ultimately cross paths with a careless driver. Some people survive these ordeals while others do not. Reckless driving can be seen all the time. These drivers do not only put their lives in danger but also the lives of other innocent people. Valuable property has been destroyed in the hands of irresponsible drivers. To improve our driving it is essential to acknowledge some common dangerous habits practiced by drivers.
The most common dangerous habit is driving under the influence of alcohol. In my opinion, this is the greatest offence. People with this tendency should recognize that they put other in jeopardy. While driving it is important to be attentive, alcohol makes this impossible (Wanberg et al 17). Another bad habit to consider is eating while driving. Most of the time the driver is distracted while eating. For example, a driver spills ketchup on their clothes and then cleans it up. These few seconds taken away from the road is enough for one to be involved in an accident. With the recent development mobile phones, everyone wants to receive and make calls while driving, text and read messages. A driver who is receiving a call or texting will take their eyes off the road. As an alternative, people now use hands-free devices. Nevertheless, the driver is still distracted while driving and using the phone at the same time. Hands- free devices do not stop solve the problem of texting. This is because the driver is still distracted.
Speeding falls in the category of a dangerous driving habit. It is most dangerous in residential neighborhoods where children play along the road. Again, it is risky while entering and exiting roads. While speeding, a driver will fail to see impending risks. For example, a child riding a bicycle may stumble and fall. A driving who is speeding may not be able to break in time and knock the child. . Indicators were designed to help drivers give notice of their intention. Failure to use signs is a risk to pedestrians and other road users. Correct use of indicators will help to avoid accidents. The least that drivers can do is indicate properly while using the roads. Selfish drivers who are fond of using overlapping or undertaking also contribute to road accidents. These drivers loose patience when in traffic and engage in this irritating habit. Other drivers also lack the discipline to stay in their own lanes. They shift from one lane to another without warning.
Speed limits are important road signs. Failure to follow speed limits can lead to accidents. A driver will not react in time to save a situation. Other drivers due to mechanical problems drive without their light when supposed to. This can be at dawn, dusk, when foggy or raining heavily. This is usually a recipe for disaster. Women are fond of putting on their make up on their way to the mall, work or a party. They often make excuses that they were busy taking care of their homes. Although this might feel right to them but it is a very dangerous habit. Other forms of distractions while include listening to the radio while driving, talking to someone in the same car or in another car.
Most of the dangerous driving habits start because of overconfidence (Stewart 10). After driving for years, some drivers become too failure and fail to drive carefully. Drivers, who want to eat, talk and drive must realize that they put themselves in great danger. The best way to stop these bad habits is to practice using signs, indicate when turning, look out for speed limits, take along a designated driver, use lanes appropriately, eat at a restaurant or at home and use hands-free devices when necessary.
