In the novel fight club by Chuck Palahniuk, characters have been portrayed in various ways. The aim of this will be to focus on how the characters have been represented in the novel. The characters in the novel include the narrator, Tyler Durden, Marla Singer, Robert “Bob” Paulson and Motif. The novel features a narrator who is not named but works as a product recall specialist. The job of the narrator makes him to suffer from misery and restlessness. The narrator constantly uses the name Joe in the novel and this makes the reader to think that the narrator’s name is Joe. The narrator does not recognize his identity and this makes him not to have control of his life. The narrator sees the doctor because of his suffering and the doctor refers him to a support group for men suffering from testicular cancer. This makes him to release his emotions through crying and listening to the problems of others. His misery and restlessness is cured by this experience but it is short-lived when he meets Marla. The narrator is portrayed as a dynamic person whose character depends on what is happening in their surrounding. This is demonstrated by the influence that his environment has on his life. We observe him being influenced by his job until it comes to appoint that he does not understand himself. This demonstrates the drastic changes that are reflected in the life of the character. Though the narrator attempts to define himself when he joined the group, this does not help him to get his identity. Therefore, he ends up in the fight club to try to discover himself. We also observe at the beginning of the novel the narrator trying to identify himself with his possessions. He describes his furniture t show how they are expensive and well made. This shows the character trait of the narrator as being irregular. The changes above that the narrator goes through portray him as an irregular person whose character cannot be predicted. The narrator meets with Tyler Durden who engage him in an explosion. As a result of this explosion, the narrator explains to the police that he lost his identity in the explosion. The narrator is used to represent the real life situation where the character of people depends on their surrounding. People will tend to be influenced by what is happening in their environment. For example, the level of motivation of the workers depends on the salaries that they are paid. If the salary is low, there is a high probability that the performance will be low.
Tyler Durden is another character that works in the night and causes trouble to the companies that he is working for. He engages in other extra jobs so that he can supplement his income. Such jobs include making soaps. Therefore, this demonstrates him as a hardworking character.
