Research Paper Proposal

Poverty eradication is part of the Millennium Development goals 2015. Before eradicating a problem, one must establish the root cause and from there appropriate action can be taken. Therefore, studies are conducted in that light and are conducted by various bodies and scholars. The studies have indicated a strong and direct relationship between illiteracy and poverty levels. The goal of the paper will be to demonstrate clearly how low illiteracy levels are the leading contributor to high poverty levels in the United States.

The preliminary part of the paper must have the thesis statement, which will have been mentioned in the first paragraph. It will also have the definitions of some of the terms discussed in the paper. This particular paper will discuss the following terms:

  • Literacy levels
  • Poverty levels
  • Millennium Development Goals 2015
  • Socioeconomic status
  • Low income families
  • Middle income level families

Having discussed the thesis and defined the terms, this will be followed by discussions on the studies that have been conducted on illiteracy levels in the United States. This will be inclusive of the findings and references. For instance, studies reveal that poor families are much less involved or concerned in the children’s education and learning systems. Another example is a study that was conducted by the Education Trust confirms that, students from poor backgrounds and low-income families have a higher probability of dropping out from school as compared to their counterparts from middle income and wealthy backgrounds. The study further revealed that an individual’s socioeconomic wellbeing is a major foreteller of the odds of dropping out of school. The paragraph will discuss illiteracy levels and the studies conducted at length in order to give a full understanding of the concept.

After explaining the illiteracy levels concept and describing case studies, and including statistics, the next paragraph will briefly describe what poverty levels are. What will follow is an insightful description of the direct relationship between illiteracy and poverty levels. This will include a review of some of the case studies that have been done by scholars. The examples provided will be based on comparisons between poverty and education levels of different races and socioeconomic class. This will be part of the material that will be presented in order to give a clear relationship between the two parameters. The studies and statistics provided in the paper will give the reader a better understanding of concept as it will be based on facts.

This paper will provide pointers and useful insights to social workers. Poverty is a social issue that is prevailing today and is growing at an alarming rate. Social workers work with communities, which are often marginalized. More often than not, the communities that need social work intervention are often plagued by poverty and other related issues such as high crime rates, teenage pregnancies and a high number of juvenile delinquents. The paper will give more information on poverty levels that is deemed useful to social workers. This will help them understand the communities in which they will be working in, in future. For instance, in the African American communities, the social workers will be able to form a link between poverty and crime rates. The paper will also be instrumental to policy makers while making reforms in the direction of education and eradication of poverty as it will inform policy.
