Reasons for failing to make satisfactory academic progress
Academic progress is the process that helps a student achieve his or her full academic potential. Incase a student fails to meet or achieve satisfactory academic progress, it is necessary that the necessary provisions and steps be put in place so that appropriate advice and support are accorded to the student (Toops 45). The reasons behind my failure to make satisfactory academic progress is because am an emigrant from China thus, my English is very poor. It is always difficult for a Chinese student to understand English since it is our second language. In addition, most of the classes are taught in English, which leaves me not understanding most of the lessons taught. Due to lack of understanding English and not doing good at it, I have not been able to make satisfactory academic progress. Another reason that makes me not to make satisfactory academic progress is because I recently changed my major subject from psychology to chemistry therefore, I need to restudy so that I can be at per with the rest of the class. Joining a new class after changing my major subject to chemistry has made my academic progress unsatisfactory. There are many notes I need to write and revise through since I found when other students in the same class ahead. Starting a new subject in the mid of the semester causes a lot of confusion and thus requires a lot of attention and concentration. Therefore, I have failed to make satisfactory academic progress because of the change of subject from my major psychology to chemistry. I have not been able to make satisfactory academic progress because recently, my father had a serious surgery back in china. This has left my family including my mother and my brothers under my care. I just realized that I spend most of my time helping my young brothers with their schoolwork and my mother in other things whenever need be. Thus, I am always left with less time for myself to study since by the time I settle down to start revising my academic work, am already exhausted. This makes it hard for me to understand anything thus a reason to my failure to make satisfactory academic progress.
Steps taken that will allow me to make satisfactory academic progress this semester
There have been changes or steps that I have put in place that will enable me to make satisfactory academic progress this semester. For instance, for me to improve my English language, I have decided to attend some of the English classes that are being offered in our college during my free time. By learning English and understanding it, I will be able to improve in my academic work since I will not require any person to make interpretations for me concerning a certain subject. In order to perform better in chemistry as my new major subject, I have set aside on my timetable extra time that will allow me to concentrate on that particular subject so that I can catch up with rest of my fellow students. During this extra study time, I plan to seek guidance and assistance from my classmates and the instructor in charge so that they can help in explaining to me areas that I do not understand. I know through my effort that I am putting in my studies this semester; I will improve and be able to make academic satisfactory progress. Concerning my father’s situation and the responsibilities at home, I have set a side weekends so that I can be able to help my brothers and my mother with house duties. Through this, I will have a humble time during the weekdays to carry out my academic work without destructions. Therefore, I strongly believe that with these steps and changes in place, I am going to make satisfactory academic progress this semester.
