Appropriate technology for sustainable future examines the different ways through which people can apply different technologies to suit their needs. The content of the work is well thought out, and it seems that given more space and time, a lot of information can be included. Each of the topics is divided into two segments, the teacher and the student section. It has included many examples and cases of how people use simple technology in their daily lives, and how this has made their lives easier. The different activities in different sections of the work enable students to open their minds and check how they can appropriately use appropriate technology. In addition to this, the article takes an in-depth look on solar cookers, and gives various ways how a person can make the cookers.
The work is limited by the fact that it does not offer all the details concerning the materials it offers. For instance, it fails to mention the disadvantages of the different technologies it has included and only gives the benefits of using the specific appropriate technology. Some of solutions to the technologies may not be practical in some situations because of various limitations such as money to buy the needed equipment. In the case of solar cookers, the people may not have the necessary equipment needed to know the temperatures of the cookers. In other cases, accessing the materials required, such as pedals, would be a problem. Appropriate technology for sustainable development has mostly practical solutions for the teachers and the students. Getting the needed materials and other resources needed may however be a problem. The work is limited by the fact that it does not note the limitations of some of its solutions.
The volunteer in the case study took some measures to ensure that he helped the people in the region. Most of his actions were commendable. The volunteered ensured that the people exercised their sovereignty by deciding what they wanted to plant on the field. He pursued the responsible people in the government to ensure that they provided the community with the resources they needed. He strengthened and encouraged the people and this made them enthusiastic and willing to take on the work. The volunteer was keen on building alliances with the people in the community, the members in the cooperative and other volunteers. He ensured that he maintained a good relationship with the people in different sectors. Although he was not able to learn the local language, he ensured that he maintained and strengthened the bond that he had with everybody.
The volunteer failed to realize that he could not depend on the people to ensure that they delivered. The resources that he had been waiting for were not delivered on time. The volunteer put all his efforts in one project. He failed to allocate time for other projects he had planned for and this limited him in the end. Had he taken a keen interest in other existing organizations, he would have known the easiest way to get the resources he required. The volunteer did not allow the local people to handle the whole project on their own. Given the chance, they would probably have known where to get the seeds. When he arrived in the town, he failed to check whether there was a good communication system. This hindered him since he was not able to communicate to the ministry concerning the missing seeds. The whole project was not driven by the community. The government had a large part in making decision. The volunteer was wrong in failing to observe these measures.
